Telopea is a suburb located approximately 23 kilometers northwest of Sydney's Central Business District in New South Wales, Australia. It is bordered by Kissing Point Road to the south and Pennant Hills Road to the north, with a 2021 Census population of 5,356 residents in the City of Parramatta.
The area was originally inhabited by the Wallamettagul clan of the Darug Nation before European settlement began. The suburb is named after Telopea speciosissima, the New South Wales waratah, a plant that was abundant in the area before colonization and became the floral emblem of New South Wales.
One of the earliest Colonial landowners was Thomas Arndell, the first doctor in Parramatta, who received a grant of 70 acres in 1794.
Telopea features heritage-listed "Redstone" (Winter House) at 34 Adderton Road, an outstanding example of architect Walter Burley Griffin's domestic work. The suburb has 13 parks covering nearly 16.2% of total area, providing extensive green spaces for recreation and community activities.
The area maintains its connection to the waratah flower through Telopea Public School, which still features the Telopea speciosissima flower imagery on their school crest.
Telopea is served by Telopea Public School, which opened in the late 1950s on a site formerly belonging to Yates Company, flower and seed merchants. The school proudly maintains its historic connections through the waratah flower imagery on its crest.
Notable figure Herbert Rumsey (1866-1956) was the founder of an agricultural nursery and seed firm who ran a well-known store near Telopea Railway Station.
