Ryde is a suburb located approximately 13 kilometers north-west of Sydney's Central Business District and serves as the administrative center of the City of Ryde local government area. It is bordered by Gladesville to the south, West Ryde to the west, Macquarie Park to the north, and East Ryde to the northeast.
As of the 2021 Census, Ryde had a population of approximately 23,000 residents, making it one of the larger suburbs in the area with a diverse multicultural community.
The area was originally inhabited by Aboriginal peoples before European settlement beginning in 1792 with land grants along the Parramatta River. Ryde was named after Ryde on the Isle of Wight by early settlers who saw similarities in the landscape.
The area developed as the "Field of Mars" and became an important agricultural region. The railway reached Ryde in 1886, spurring suburban development. The first postal office opened in the 1840s, and Ryde was proclaimed a municipality in 1870.
Ryde offers numerous attractions, including Top Ryde City shopping center, one of Sydney's major retail destinations. Ryde Park provides extensive recreational facilities including tennis courts, bowling greens, and children's playgrounds. The suburb features several heritage buildings, including historic churches and colonial-era structures.
ELS Hall Park offers sports facilities and community events. The area provides easy access to both the Parramatta River and Lane Cove River for water-based activities.
Ryde hosts several educational institutions, including Ryde Public School, Ryde East Public School, and Ryde Secondary College. Private schools include All Saints' College and Holy Cross College.
The area has produced various notable residents in business, politics, and the arts.
