History of Rydalmere
The area originally formed part of "The Ponds" and later "Field of Mars," reflecting military land grant origins. Phillip Schaeffer received the earliest grant in 1791, followed by allocations to eight marines and two HMS Sirius crew members in 1792.
Orchardist Thomas O'Neill coined "Rydalmere" in 1866, combining "Rydal" from England's Lake District with "mere" meaning lake. This subdivision marked transformation from agricultural estate to residential development.
The Female Orphan School, established in 1813 by Governor Macquarie, operated until 1886. The site later became Rydalmere Hospital for the Insane before housing Western Sydney University from 1995.
