Parramatta is a major suburb and city center located approximately 25 kilometers west of Sydney's Central Business District, serving as the administrative center of the City of Parramatta. It is bordered by North Parramatta to the north, Westmead to the west, and numerous other suburbs.
As of the 2021 Census, the Parramatta local government area had a population of approximately 257,000, with the suburb itself housing around 31,000 residents in a highly diverse, multicultural community.
The area was originally inhabited by Aboriginal peoples who called it "Burramatta," meaning "head of waters." European settlement began in 1788 when Governor Arthur Phillip established it as Australia's second settlement, initially called Rose Hill before being renamed Parramatta in 1791.
It was proclaimed a town in 1790 and became larger and more important than Sydney in its early years. The first industries included farming, flour milling, and timber processing, with the first postal office established in the early 1800s.
Parramatta offers numerous attractions, including the historic Elizabeth Farm (1793), Australia's oldest surviving homestead, and Old Government House (1799), part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Parramatta Park provides extensive recreational facilities, while Westfield Parramatta offers major shopping and dining.
The Powerhouse Museum Parramatta and Riverside Theatres provide cultural experiences. The Parramatta River foreshore features walking paths, playgrounds, and water activities, making it popular with families and visitors.
Parramatta hosts numerous educational institutions, including Parramatta Public School, Arthur Phillip High School, and The King's School (established 1832), one of Australia's oldest schools. The area includes several universities and TAFE institutions.
Notable figures associated with Parramatta include early governors and pioneers who shaped Australian history.
