About Mortlake

Mortlake is a suburb located approximately 10 kilometers west of Sydney's Central Business District in New South Wales, Australia. It sits on the southern bank of the Parramatta River, bordered by Cabarita, Concord, and Breakfast Point, with a 2016 Census population of 1,063 residents.

History of Mortlake

The area was originally inhabited by the Wangal people of the Eora nation. Originally called Bottle Point, the suburb's name derives from Mortlake by the Thames in London, as the Parramatta River was known as the "Thames of the Antipodes."

European settlement began in 1795 with land grants to John Miller, John Robertson, and Benjamin Butcher. The Australian Gas Light Company established major gasworks here in 1883, followed by the first electric tramway in 1912 and the Mortlake Ferry in 1928.

Tourist Attractions in Mortlake

Mortlake's premier attraction is the historic Mortlake Ferry, also known as the Putney Punt, Sydney's last surviving vehicular punt service crossing the Parramatta River. Visitors can enjoy Wangal Reserve with barbecue facilities and playground near the ferry terminal.

Nearby Breakfast Point offers scenic riverside walks and dining options, while Tom Murphy Reserve provides green space for recreation. The Palace Hotel serves as a local dining destination with easy access to Cabarita Park for swimming.

Schools and Notable People in Mortlake

Mortlake is served by Mortlake Public School, established in 1887, accommodating 414 students from Kindergarten to Year 6. Students also attend nearby Putney Public School and Ryde Secondary College for secondary education.

The suburb's most notable resident was Mervyn Victor Richardson, who invented the first Victa lawn mower in his Mortlake garage. The revolutionary mowers went on sale in September 1952, transforming lawn care across Australia.
