Melrose Park is a suburb located approximately 12 kilometers northwest of Sydney's Central Business District in New South Wales, Australia. It sits on the northern bank of the Parramatta River, split between City of Ryde and City of Parramatta, with a 2021 Census population of 2,059 residents.
The area was originally inhabited by the Wallumedegal Aboriginal tribe who called the area Walumetta, meaning their traditional country. European settlement began with land grants given to ex-marines John Colethread and Isaac Archer on 3 January 1792, making it part of the early Field of Mars area grants.
The large housing estate was subdivided in 1928 and named in honour of aviator Charles James Melrose (1913-1936), who held numerous flying records before dying tragically in a plane crash.
Melrose Park was famous for Ermington Putt Putt, which operated from 1969 to 2017 as one of Sydney's most beloved family attractions featuring three 18-hole mini golf courses. The facility hosted almost four million visitors and 200,000 children's parties during its nearly five decades of operation.
Today visitors can enjoy the modern Melrose Park playground on Lancaster Avenue featuring rope and log scramble sets, swings, and sandstone water features.
Melrose Park is served by Melrose Park Public School, established in 1945 originally as Walumetta Infants School to serve the growing Golf Links Estate. The school was renamed to its current name in 1947 and continues to provide quality primary education for local families.
The suburb's most notable connection is aviator Charles James Melrose, after whom it was named, who achieved fame for his flying records and solo completion of the 1934 Melbourne Centenary Air Race before his untimely death.
