About Lidcombe

Lidcombe sits 15 kilometers west of Sydney's CBD, spanning Cumberland Council and a small section within the City of Parramatta. This vibrant multicultural suburb borders Auburn, Berala, and Homebush West.
The 2021 Census recorded 21,197 residents with remarkable diversity. Only 30.6% were Australian-born, while 14.4% originated from South Korea and 11.1% from China.


History of Lidcombe

Originally inhabited by Aboriginal peoples, European settlement began with early 1800s land grants. The area was incorporated as Rookwood Borough in 1891, named after the expanding cemetery.
In 1913, council renamed the municipality Lidcombe, combining mayors Frederick Lidbury and Henry Larcombe's surnames to distance from cemetery associations. The suburb flourished with 1880s railway access, attracting workers to nearby industries.
Post-WWII European migration, particularly Ukrainians, established a strong cultural presence that continues today. The area became Sydney's Ukrainian cultural center with churches, halls, and schools.

Tourist Attractions in Lidcombe

Lidcombe Oval holds sporting history as Western Suburbs Magpies' former fortress from 1967-1986, with an attendance record of 21,015 set in 1978. Visitors can explore The Gables, a heritage-listed historic home now serving as a function center.
The Tooheys Brewery on Parramatta Road offers industrial heritage. Ukrainian cultural buildings showcase the suburb's multicultural character and community spirit.
