About Ermington

Ermington occupies a riverside position 15 kilometers from Sydney's CBD on the northern bank of the Parramatta River. The suburb is surrounded by Dundas, Rydalmere, and Melrose Park within the City of Parramatta.
This family-friendly community houses approximately 9,470 residents. The demographic includes 58.1% Australian-born residents, 7% from China, 4% from South Korea, and 2.5% from Lebanon.

History of Ermington

The Wallumettagal people were original inhabitants, calling this riverside area Walumetta. In February 1792, Governor Arthur Phillip granted 80-acre parcels to eight marines, including Alexander McDonald who received 130 acres as a married man.
Major Edmund Lockyer built a stone mansion in 1828, naming it after Ermington parish in Devon, England. Lockyer served as Parramatta's Police Magistrate after arriving in 1825.
Early enterprises included Gregory Blaxland's award-winning vineyard from 1806, producing Australia's first wine export to England in 1822. Post-WWII development transformed fruit farms into housing estates for returning servicemen.

Tourist Attractions in Ermington

George Kendall Riverside Park offers 20 hectares of recreational space along the Parramatta River, perfect for cycling and family activities. The park hosts baseball diamonds and various sporting facilities for community use.

Ermington Public School serves the local community with quality primary education. Ermington High School operated briefly before becoming Marsden High School in 1959.
The suburb proudly claims Betty Cuthbert, the "Golden Girl" of the 1956 Olympics, who attended local public school. Test cricketer Greg Matthews also received his early education at Ermington Public School.
